For most of its history, the internet has waited for us.

The internet provides the information, and humans make the decisions.
But what happens when that relationship flips?

It may look like the internet we already know.
Underneath, however, it could operate very differently.
And if the idea becomes reality, one of the biggest changes in the history of the web may be approaching.
The first internet was largely about connecting computers.
The web that followed connected people to information.
Search engines then made that information easier to find.
Social platforms turned the web into a giant communication network.
Now AI agents are introducing another possibility:
An internet where software doesn't simply retrieve information — it acts.
An AI agent can potentially understand a goal rather than just a command.
Instead of asking:
"Find me a hotel in Tokyo."
A person might say:
"Find me a good hotel in Tokyo for four nights. Keep the total under $1,000, stay close to public transport, and prioritize places with excellent reviews."
The difference sounds small.
Technologically, it is enormous.

The agentic web challenges this architecture.
If software agents become the primary users of some online services, websites may increasingly need to communicate with machines directly.
Instead of an agent staring at a webpage and trying to interpret what a human would see, services could expose structured information and actions designed specifically for software.
A restaurant could provide machine-readable availability.
A bank could expose controlled financial actions.
A travel company could allow agents to search and reserve tickets.
A retailer could provide real-time inventory, pricing and purchasing capabilities.
The visible website would still exist for humans.
But underneath it, another internet could emerge.
An internet where agents talk to agents.
Imagine telling your personal AI:

Your agent begins searching.
It contacts retailers.
It examines product specifications.
It checks stock.
It compares prices.
Another company's shopping agent may respond with product information.

The internet hasn't disappeared.

This is one of the defining ideas of the agentic web:
Humans increasingly express intent, while machines handle execution.
For decades, search engines have been the gateway to the internet.

The search engine returns pages.
You inspect the results.
You choose one.
Then you repeat the process.
AI agents could collapse this sequence.
Instead of presenting ten blue links, an agent might perform the research itself.
This could fundamentally change search behavior.
The question would shift from:
"Where can I find information?"
to:
"Can my agent accomplish this for me?"
That difference has huge consequences for the companies that built businesses around clicks, impressions and website traffic.
If an AI agent retrieves information without sending the user to the original website, the economics of the web could change.
A company might have millions of people indirectly using its data without millions of people visiting its website.
That raises a difficult question:
Who gets the traffic, the money and the relationship with the customer when an AI stands between the user and the web?
For years, search engines became powerful because they sat between people and information.

That could create an entirely new form of digital marketing.
The traditional web created an entire industry around search engine optimization.
Businesses learned how to structure websites so search engines could discover and rank them.
The agentic web could produce a similar transformation.
But instead of optimizing primarily for human search behavior, companies may need to optimize for machine decision-making.
What information does an AI agent need?
Can it understand a product's features?
Can it verify availability?
Are prices clearly structured?
Can it determine whether a service meets a user's requirements?
Can it safely complete a transaction?
A beautiful website may not be enough.
A company could have the world's most impressive homepage and still be invisible to agents if its information is difficult for machines to access or trust.
The next generation of digital optimization could therefore be less about attracting clicks and more about becoming machine-readable, machine-understandable and machine-selectable.
There is, however, a major problem.
Humans can sometimes recognize when something feels suspicious.
Machines aren't automatically immune to deception.
An agent operating across the internet could encounter fake reviews, misleading information, fraudulent sellers, malicious websites or manipulated data.
Imagine giving an AI permission to purchase something for you.
What happens if a malicious website convinces the agent that a fraudulent product is legitimate?
Or an agent receives instructions designed to make it reveal private information?
Or a company structures its online content specifically to manipulate AI recommendations?
The agentic web therefore needs something more important than speed:
trust infrastructure.
Agents may need ways to verify who they are communicating with, whether information is authentic, whether an action is authorized and whether a transaction is safe.
Identity, permissions, provenance and security could become fundamental layers of the next web.
This is where the concept becomes particularly strange.
Today, humans negotiate with businesses.
In an agentic future, agents may negotiate with agents.
Your travel agent could communicate with an airline's booking system.
Your shopping agent could communicate with a retailer's pricing system.
Your business agent could negotiate with another company's procurement agent.
A software agent might even decide which AI service to use based on price, performance and reliability.
The internet could become a massive marketplace of autonomous software.
And unlike humans, these systems could communicate at machine speed.
A negotiation that would take humans hours could potentially happen in seconds.
Thousands of alternatives could be evaluated automatically.
Millions of tiny decisions could happen without human involvement.
That sounds incredibly efficient.
It also creates a new category of problems.
Imagine an agent with permission to manage your calendar.
It accidentally cancels an important meeting.
Or your financial agent misunderstands a transaction.
Or a purchasing agent buys 500 units instead of five.
Or two corporate agents negotiate a contract based on incorrect assumptions.
The problem isn't necessarily that AI is malicious.
It is that autonomy multiplies consequences.
A chatbot giving you a wrong answer is frustrating.
An autonomous system taking a wrong action can be expensive.
This means the agentic web will likely require sophisticated permission systems.
Agents may need different levels of authority:
Read.
Recommend.
Ask for approval.
Execute.
Execute within limits.
A personal AI might be allowed to order groceries automatically but require confirmation before spending $5,000.
The future of AI autonomy may therefore depend as much on permission architecture as intelligence.
Perhaps the strangest consequence is that the internet might become more invisible.
Today's internet is a collection of pages.
Tomorrow's internet could increasingly become a collection of capabilities.
Instead of thinking:
"I need to visit this website."
You might think:
"I need this task completed."
The websites, APIs, databases and services behind the scenes become infrastructure.
Your agent connects everything.
You see the outcome.
This could make the internet feel dramatically simpler.
But simplicity for the user could mean complexity behind the scenes.
A single sentence from you could trigger dozens of interactions between software systems.
Your agent might search several databases, contact multiple services, compare results, verify information, execute a payment and update your calendar.
You see one response.
Behind it, an entire digital supply chain has been activated.
This may ultimately become the most important question.
If your AI agent becomes the interface between you and the internet, who owns it?
Who controls its priorities?
Who decides what it recommends?
Can companies pay to influence its choices?
Can governments regulate it?
Can you move your preferences from one agent to another?
Can you inspect why it made a decision?
And perhaps most importantly:
Is the agent actually working for you?
The answer cannot simply be assumed.
The history of the internet has repeatedly shown that intermediaries gain enormous power.
Search engines became gateways.
Social networks became attention markets.
App stores became distribution platforms.
The agentic web could create another generation of powerful intermediaries — except this time, the intermediary may be making decisions rather than merely displaying information.
The promise of the agentic web is nevertheless enormous.
It could remove countless tedious tasks from everyday life.
Searching.
Comparing.
Scheduling.
Booking.
Ordering.
Filing forms.
Researching.
Negotiating.
Monitoring.
Following up.
Instead of learning how every website works, you could simply explain what you want.
The web would adapt to your goal.
That could be particularly powerful for people who find today's internet overwhelming.
You wouldn't need to know which website to visit.
You wouldn't need to understand complicated interfaces.
You wouldn't need to compare dozens of tabs.
You would simply state your objective.
Your agent would navigate the complexity.
The first internet connected machines.
The web connected information.
Social media connected people.
The agentic web may connect intent to action.
That distinction could be bigger than it sounds.
For more than three decades, we've learned to use the internet by clicking, typing and scrolling.
The next generation may require much less of that.
You could wake up and say:
"Plan my day."
Your AI checks your calendar, traffic, weather, priorities and messages.
Later:
"Find me the best flight for next weekend."
It searches, compares and asks for approval.
Then:
"Handle the paperwork for my new business."
It gathers documents, fills forms and tells you where human approval is required.
You aren't browsing the internet.
You are delegating it.
And that may be the defining shift.
The internet isn't necessarily becoming less important.
It may be becoming more powerful — while becoming almost invisible to the people using it.
The browser once taught humans how to navigate the digital world.
The agentic web could reverse that relationship.
Humans will describe where they want to go.
Machines will figure out how to get there.
And somewhere behind the screen, millions of autonomous agents may begin talking, negotiating, searching and acting on our behalf.
The next internet may not be a place we visit.
It may be something that works for us.
